What Is CVD Diamond

What is CVD Diamond? Know Everything About CVD Diamonds Here!

CVD or Chemical Vapor Deposition diamond’s use in precious jewelry which was not widespread until 2015; however, it is not a new material for industrial applications like Machining and cutting tools, Electronics, and optical materials production for decades. With the introduction of more modern technologies, CVD diamonds are ready to be used as gem-quality man-made diamonds for your favorite jewelry products. Diamond and nature lovers will love this latest concept of an eco-friendly and budget-friendly lab grown diamond jewelry option. It is full of uniqueness and elegance that will blow your mind and drive you to think, “Humans can make anything and everything.”

Here we try to clear the concept of CVD diamond with the FAQ section below. Hoping it helps you.

What is CVD diamond?

CVD or Chemical Vapor Deposition diamonds are human-made diamonds, created under controlled laboratory conditions. This process needs a lot of TLC (Thin Layer Chromatography) method. With this method, a diamond is formed whose chemical composition, crystal formation, and solidity are the same as natural diamonds.

This process happens the same way as small snowflakes assemble in snowfall and the way water vapors meets and becomes a cloud.

In this technique, Diamond is grown through a mixture of hydrocarbon gases. The process is to start with placing a slice of HPHT produced diamond seed in a vacuum chamber. The chamber is then heated around 800-1200 degrees Celsius.

Once the chamber is closed, and the temperature of heat is maintained, then gases like methane are released in the chamber.

Because of the appropriate heat and pressure, gases become ionized and start discharging their molecular bonds, which let the pure carbon tie-up with the diamond seed and crystallize. With time carbon takes its shape by making an atomic carbon bond. Resulting, the thin diamond seed became a real diamond.

History of CVD diamonds.

The first Lab made diamond, which was produced by General Electric in 1956, was the HPHT diamond. But in 1954, precisely before the HPHT diamonds announcement, a patent was present for another growing method of the diamond, which was CVD. But because of some doubt in the CVD diamond report, it was not launched for many years.

In the 1980s, with the advanced high technique and intelligence, scientists discovered the right method of growing gem quality lab diamonds through the CVD method.

However, CVD diamonds are not created the exact way a natural diamond is formed. It produced diamonds from a heated mixture of gases at low pressures. In ordinary situations, a combination of heated gases at low-pressure form graphite or other rock minerals. But in the CVD growth chamber, this process result is a beautiful CVD diamond.

Benefits of CVD diamonds

Natural diamonds are rare and adorable, but what if you get better than rare at your price? Yes, you read it right BETTER than natural diamond.

There are many aspects where CVD diamonds are better than natural diamonds like purity, price, and environmental effect.

  • Only 2% of mined diamonds are considered as the purest diamond with no inclusion and dirt, but all CVD diamonds are IIA type, which means they have no impurities.
  • Don’t ever think that high-price leads to better things because sometimes the best of the diamonds comes with the least price. That’s what happens with CVD diamonds; they cost ¼ times lesser than natural diamonds.
  • Are you guessing that natural diamonds whose name itself includes “NATURE” will never harm the environment? Then maybe you are misguided. CVD diamonds are eco friendly while mined diamonds are not.

By this, you may get the interest to know more about the price of CVD diamond. That’s what our next topic explained.

Difference between CVD diamonds and natural diamonds

Two diamonds with the same faceted crystallized carbon, spark the same, and hold similar characteristics. They are identical in every way; it’s just that their origin is different.  And also some factors that suggest CVD diamond is more worthy than a mined diamond.

  • Where natural diamonds are formed naturally deep in the earth, CVD diamonds are engineered by scientists in a laboratory using an enclosed plasma cell.
  • If you go for CVD diamonds instead of natural diamonds then you will save 30-40%  monetary.
  • CVD diamonds come from ethical sources only while in natural diamonds there was always a risk of bloody diamonds and unethical sources of diamonds.
  • As natural diamonds are from below the earth’s surface approximately 2-5 miles (8.05 km) down, machinery has to use a vast amount of diesel and dig up to millions of tonnes of land to bring the mined diamonds on the surface. Even for a single carat diamond, the earth has to dig up to 250 tonnes. While in CVD diamond no soil movement is being done.
  • While excavating natural diamonds, air pollution occurs (2011 ounces/carat), and 143 pounds of CO2 is released for a carat of diamond. On the other hand, creating a CVD diamond contributes only 0.001 ounces of air pollution.
  • The process of mining natural diamonds causes deforestation, global warming, and soil erosion.

What is the price of a CVD diamonds?

Well, it totally depends on with whom you are comparing. If you compare CVD diamonds with natural diamonds, it will cost 20-30% less, giving you the same color, clarity, and cut. Surprisingly, If you compare CVD diamond with moissanite, it will seem expensive, and the reason is clear moissanite is not a real diamond while CVD is. And compared to HPHT diamond, CVD is Cheaper as it requires less costly types of equipment compared to HPHT.

Furthermore, It also depends on your source and time of purchasing. From where you are buying, what time you are buying, and what discount you are getting.

During the wedding season, it might not be a pleasuring price from other periods of the year. So if you are planning to buy a diamond for your wedding/marriage or engagement ring, buy it before 5-6 months.

Always check 3-4 websites and compare their pricing, reviews, and their discount offer. Check out our buy page where you can buy diamonds with the best discount offer

How to care for CVD Diamonds?

Since diamonds are one of the most durable substances on earth, that doesn’t mean they do not need maintenance. Diamond and diamond jewelry do require some care and cleaning to sustain its quality and spark.

  • Where you put a diamond, is most important. Always keep your CVD diamond in a given box or ziplock bag to make it safe from any unpredictable accident.
  • Periodic professional cleaning can make your diamond shine more.
  • Try not to use the ultrasonic cleaner as much as possible, as it will harm the metal of your jewelry.
  • Always remove your jewelry before going for any heavy household cleaning or sports activities.
  • Wear your jewelry after applying your skin product to keep your jewelry safe from any external chemical.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, CVD diamonds are grown with conditions similar to the formation of the mined diamond under the earth. Hence, we cannot say CVD diamond synthetic or artificial.

Completely not, they both are different from each other. CVD diamonds hold elements like carbon atoms that make CVD diamond durable and similar to real diamonds, not with the CZ, which does not contain any carbon and is comparatively weaker than CVD diamonds.

Beside their origin, nothing is different between natural and CVD diamonds. By physical, optical, chemical, or thermal CVD diamonds are the same as natural diamonds. Also, CVD is the purest type of diamond, as it is also called IIa diamond.

All diamonds are classified into two types II and IIa. II are the types of diamonds that hold some impurities in them, and IIa are the types that include diamonds considered as no impurities or inclusion in them. Even in natural diamonds, only 1-2 % of diamonds come in IIa types. But all CVD diamonds are IIa diamonds because of their controlled method process of growing.

Our scientists have researched for many years how diamonds are created deep in the earth. As a result, we get the secret of the diamond making process. And now, we can grow diamonds in laboratories through two methods known as CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) and HPHT (High-Temperature High Pressure) in just three weeks.

HPHT diamonds are high in price, and the resulting diamonds of HPHT are yellowish and brownish because of their high pressure and high-temperature method. On the other hand, CVD diamonds are comparatively less in price and good quality as it needs small and inexpensive equipment.

In CVD, a thin seed diamond is placed under a sealed chamber, and a blanket of carbon-rich gases are spread at a controlled temperature.

While in HPHT, carbon seed is processed through extreme heat and pressure by which a rough diamond is created.

The process of growing a CVD diamond is unique. In this process, a seed of diamond is placed under a closed plasma chamber with a high temperature of 800 °C. Then in the container, rich-carbon gases are released. The gases are ionized and start discharging their molecular bonds, which let the pure carbon tie-up with the diamond seed. With time carbon takes its shape by making an atomic carbon bond. By this, the thin diamond seed became a real diamond.

CVD diamonds are grown in a laboratory with less equipment and supplements. While in natural diamonds, the process of mining and transportation takes many costs comparatively. Hence, the CVD diamonds are more affordable than natural diamonds.

Alike natural diamonds CVD diamonds also have inclusions that affect its grading.

Grading of CVD diamond depends on its 4 C’s; color, carat, clarity, and cut. Same as natural diamond CVD diamonds also provides a certificate of grading.

Yes, All lab-grown diamonds are graded by reputable non-profit gemological laboratories, like IGI, GCAL, GIA, and EGL.

Yes, All lab-grown diamonds are graded by reputable non-profit gemological laboratories, like IGI, GCAL, GIA, and EGL.

Shifting to CVD diamonds from natural diamonds brings many positive impacts to our environment as CVD diamonds are way more eco-friendly than natural diamonds. CVD holds many benefits; some of them are Ethical, social, and conflict-free.

NO, CVD or lab-grown diamond never fades its color or become cloudy with time as it holds the same elements as mine diamonds.

It mostly takes 3-4 weeks to grow a diamond in a lab by the CVD process. But, it also depends on the size of the diamond.

By naked eyes, it is IMPOSSIBLE. CVD diamonds are too similar to natural diamonds that even the experts in diamond fields get sometimes confused about which one is real. By which GIA specially launched a hi-tech machine which detects the lab-created diamonds.

Online is an efficient place for buying a CVD diamond as direct manufacture can reach you, and you will get the best quality diamond at the cheapest price for CVD diamond.
